Channel 5's programme Rich Kids Go Homeless, recently featured "Rich Kid" Isabella James experiencing life on the streets. A major obstacle she to finding work or getting hostel accommodation at night was the lack of photo ID, and you can't obtain photo ID without and address. Catch 22, and this can trap homeless people on the streets. Asimple solutution who be a Government backed scheme for photo ID similar to that offerd by the Big Issue to magazine sellers.
Please support Isabella's petition to provide ID to the homeless, the link is below Sign the Petition Here Most are set to close because the sub-postmaster, the private business people running smaller branches, can no longer make a living. The Government should extend the subsidy to the post office network beyond 2021 to protect small branches. Post offices have seen income from Government services fall from £576million in 2004-05 to £99million in 2017-18. The National Federation of Sub-Postmasters claim that without the subsidy the network would not be able to survive and 3,000 ‘community’ branches will be at risk. Banks axed more than 750 of their branches last year, leaving post offices as a vital service, especially for older customers. Upto 2,500 small post offices will close or downsize in the next 12 months because of financial hardship, says the National Federation of Sub-Postmasters.

As you walk around the city you can't help but notice the homeless on pavements and sleeping in doorways. The temptation is to give them money - but is that really an answer? Money can so easily be used to buy drugs or alcohol, making the situation for the homeless person worse.
Instead, there are perhaps better ways to help - 1. Give the homeless person five minutes of you time, stop and speak to them and acknowledge them as human. Listen to their story. 2. Give then a small gift, perhaps carry a chocolate bar or some sweets you can offer them. May be even buy them a sandwich or a coffee if they'd like one. 3. If they have a dog, you could buy some food for the dog. The Dogs Trust have a scheme for dogs who need to see a vet whilst living with owners on the street. If the dog needs help contact The Hope Project (click here) 4. Then the best thing you can do for the homeless person is refer them to the authorities and organisations, the professionals with the resources and expertise to move homeless people into homes. You can notify contact them for anyone in England and Wales at StreetLink (click here) Birmingham City Council have launched their consultations on saving £18 million from the budget. Proposals include using volunteers to staff the Hall of Memory, slashing the Library budget for new books and introducing a new vermin control charge of £25 to deal with rat infestations. There will also be a £10 increase for green waste wheelie bins. Car parking charges will rise and they will look to raise more money from cemeteries.
Thank you to everyone who voted in the local elections this week, democracy only works when we all participate. Also, a special thank you to those who supported me and The Liberal Party. It has been a real pleasure to meet so many people in Tyseley & Hay Mills and I have received a great deal of encouragement and support from local people. Now the work begins and I look forward to us continuing to support each other, as together we make Tyseley and Hay Mills a better place to live. Regards, Mike Sheridan To build a strong local community means we all have to start contributing to looking after our area and the other people who live here. We should not rely on other people and the Council to do everything for us. With two railway station in our area, Tyseley and Spring Road, it would be a great if we could come together and join an "Adopt-a-Station" group. We could look after the appearance of the station and platforms by doing things like planting tubs and making the stations a more pleasant place. By giving an hour of our time, we can make an impact on improving our area. If you would like to get involved in an Adopt-a-station group get in touch. |
