As you walk around the city you can't help but notice the homeless on pavements and sleeping in doorways. The temptation is to give them money - but is that really an answer? Money can so easily be used to buy drugs or alcohol, making the situation for the homeless person worse.
Instead, there are perhaps better ways to help - 1. Give the homeless person five minutes of you time, stop and speak to them and acknowledge them as human. Listen to their story. 2. Give then a small gift, perhaps carry a chocolate bar or some sweets you can offer them. May be even buy them a sandwich or a coffee if they'd like one. 3. If they have a dog, you could buy some food for the dog. The Dogs Trust have a scheme for dogs who need to see a vet whilst living with owners on the street. If the dog needs help contact The Hope Project (click here) 4. Then the best thing you can do for the homeless person is refer them to the authorities and organisations, the professionals with the resources and expertise to move homeless people into homes. You can notify contact them for anyone in England and Wales at StreetLink (click here)
